New US patents on molecular biology and biotechniques New
- Method to predict degradation of a landfill (Patent DN/20080096188)Determining when a landfill is stabilized by comparing the biological signature of a landfill over a predetermined time period with that of a known stabilized landfill.
- Methods and systems for detection and isolation of a nucleotide sequence (Patent DN/20080096191)A method for isolating nucleic acid molecules having a repeating nucleotide sequence or a homopolymeric nucleotide sequence, e.g. a poly A stretch, is described. In particular, the method uses oligomeric capture probes spiked with various amounts of locked nucleic acid (LNA). The invention further describes methods for the isolation of RNA molecules, for example polyadenylated mRNA molecules, which overcome the problems of rapid RNA degradation during isolation and analysis of such nucleic acid molecules. This is of major clinical and diagnostic importance, especially when dealing with RNA viruses, such as retroviruses or when analyzing rare or low-abundant mRNAs or mRNAs from biopsies or tissues enriched with RNases.
- Method for Eliminating potentially toxic and/or harmful substances (Patent DN/20080096185)The invention describes a method for eliminating potentially toxic and/or harmful substances, wherein particles which are capable of binding, taking up and/or carrying the toxic and/or harmful substances, are removed from a body fluid in an extracorporeal step or in an extrinsic or exogeneous device.
- Method for Preparing Conditioned Medium of Astrocyte-Like Cells (Patent DN/20080096273)Disclosed are a method for preparing a conditioned medium of astrocyte-like cells derived from embryonic stem cells, characterized in that astrocyte-like cells, which are prepared by differentiation of embryonic stem cells, are cultured; the medium obtained by said method, the use of the conditioned medium for culturing neural cells as well as for inducing the differentiation of embryonic stem cells into neural cells.
- PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ALPHA1,4-GALACTOSYLTRANSFERASE AND GALACTOSE-CONTAINING COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATE (Patent DN/20080096254)The present invention can provide a process for producing a protein having α1.4-galactosyltransferase activity using a transformant comprising a DNA encoding a protein having α1.4-galactosyltransferase activity derived from a microorganism belonging to the genus Pasteurella and a process for producing a galactose-containing complex carbohydrate using a transformant capable of producing a protein having α1.4-galactosyltransferase activity derived from a microorganism.
- Salmonella Selective Enrichment Medium Containing Tetrathionate and Magnesium Salt (Patent DN/20080096195)The invention relates to a salmonella selective enrichment medium containing tetrathionate or a salt thereof and at least one type of magnesium salt and to a method for detecting salmonella in a sample by using said selective enrichment medium.
- Methods for evaluating pathologic conditions using extracellular RNA (Patent DN/20080096217)This invention provides methods for the detection, diagnosing, monitoring, or predicting of non-neoplastic diseases, pathologic conditions, and injury. The methods of the invention detect extracellular non-neoplastic mammalian RNA in the blood, blood plasma, serum, or other bodily fluid of an animal, most preferably a human, having or predisposed to having a non-neoplastic disease, pathologic condition, or injury.
- ALCOHOL PRODUCTION USING SONICATION (Patent DN/20080096261)A system comprising one or more transducers and an alcohol production facility having a liquid medium processing stream, the alcohol production facility adapted for use with the one or more transducers is provided. In one embodiment, the one or more transducers apply sonication to the liquid medium processing stream in one or more locations. In one embodiment, the alcohol production facility is an ethanol production facility. In one embodiment, the ethanol production facility utilizes a dry grind process, modified dry grind process or wet mill process. The systems of the present invention utilize sonication at the frequencies and intensities required on an industrial scale to reduce the production cost of alcohol, such as ethanol, by improving alcohol yield per bushel, reducing processing times for higher throughput, reducing operating costs, and increasing the marketability of co-products, among other benefits.
